Hypersensitivity refers to a set of undesirable/pathological reactions against certain substances (e.g. certain foods, drugs, dust mites, pollen, etc.), situations, and physical conditions. The contributing substances are called “Allergens”. The common term “Irritable the physique” heard frequently refers to a medical term, indicating subjects with significant allergic reactions or conditions other than significant etiologies. For patients with irritable the physique, they may be prone to hypersensitive conditions such as eczema, allergic rhinitis, bronchial asthma, etc. They also may be allergic to other specific substances including metals, pollen, or drugs.
Irritable the physique on the one hand usually comes from genetic factors. On the other hand, comes from poor immunity caused by inadequate diet and great stress. The administration of drugs for patients with irritable the physique should be cautious because they could be prone to drug allergies in a severer manner. Patients with irritable the physique should strengthen immune system, do more exercise and keep balanced diet and sufficient sleep with a prepared but relaxed attitude.
In clinical practice, symptoms of hypersensitivity consist of rashes, respiratory symptoms and gastrointestinal symptoms. However, the contributing factors to those symptoms are not exactly identical. For example, rashes and gastrointestinal symptoms may be induced by food while respiratory allergies are mostly caused by inhalant allergens. Due to the warm temperature and humid island climate, over 90% of patients with respiratory allergy in Taiwan are caused by indoor dust mite while the rest 10% of patients with pet allergies often react to pet’s dander. In other words, the contributing factors to hypersensitivity in Taiwan are different from those (e.g. pollen) in other countries. For dust mite-caused hypersensitivity, routine bedding cleaning is required; meanwhile, the use of carpet or stuffed toys should also be avoided if possible.
Allergen testing involves acute and chronic tests. Acute allergen testing focuses on immunoglobulin E (IgE) tests primarily for inhalant or contact allergens while chronic allergen testing are aiming food allergens. Allergen testing is a blood test to determine allergens and reduce exposure. In addition, patients may improve their immunity and reduce the chances of hypersensitivity through proper exercise and regular/balanced lifestyle.
