Obesity is a most commonly neglected chronic condition. One out of seven people in Taiwan are obese. Body weight is not an objective marker to determine body fat accumulation in vivo due to different heights. Obesity can be self-evaluated via several ways:
1. Based on the updated Body Mass Index (BMI) classification defined by Health Promotion Administration , Ministry of Health and Welfare.
BMI = Body weight (kg) / Height (m2). However, the formula is not applicable to teenagers under 18 years, pregnant women, women are breastfeeding, elderly and athletes.
Classification |
BMI |
Status |
Underweight | <18.5 | Underweight |
Normal weight | 18.5~24 | Normal weight |
Overweight | 24~27 | Low-risk population |
Class I obesity | 27~30 | Mild obesity, moderate-risk population |
Class II obesity | 30~35 | Moderate obesity, high-risk population |
Class III obesity | >35 | Pathological obesity |
2. Body fat percentage (BFP) (is measured using a body fat monitor: Body fat monitor measures bioelectrical impedance in vivo through static current and transforms into BFP)
Classification | BMI | BFP |
Normal weight | 20%~25% | 15%~20% |
Mild obesity | 25%~30% | 20%~25% |
Obesity | 30%以上 | 25%以上 |
3. Waist circumference: Women >80 cm (31 inches); Men >90 cm (35 inches) are defined as obesity.
Because obesity may increase the possibility of chronic illnesses (e.g. cardiovascular disease, DM, etc.), a balanced diet and continuous exercise are the only measures to control proper body weight and maintain the ideal body type.
Keep balanced diet.
- The consumed energy should be less than burned calories.
